Summer without rosé wine? No way! Refreshing, mischievous and light, rose wine is simply a must-have for summer days. On 24 June, World Rosé Day, we are celebrating at Good Wine.

Producing rosé wine: red or white grapes?

First, let's take a look at how rosé wine is produced. Red grapes are always used for this type of wine, but the maceration (the contact between the grape juice and the skin of the grape) is extremely short. In red wines, maceration takes place over several days or weeks and the colouring agents in the skins have enough time to beautifully colour the grape juice. Are your ears pricked up? Yes, red wine is red because of the colouring agents in the berry skin, not because the juice of the red grapes itself is red. In fact, if you cut open a red grape, the flesh inside is white.

Rose wines are therefore made from red grapes. The shades of colour vary from wine to wine, but we can probably agree that rosé has a distinctive delicate pink or salmon colour that makes it recognisable.

Rose and food

What about food pairing? Generally speaking, rosé is a great aperitif and flows very nicely in good, relaxed company. It will be a great accompaniment to light summer dishes, seafood, risottos and pasta with light sauces, including milder cheeses. Of course, each label has its own personality and the pairing is also dictated by the residual sugar and the style of the wine - a rosé with residual sugar can be served with spicy Asian dishes, while a bubbly rosé can easily accompany a full meal on summer days.

What to choose?

In our house, we love rosé wines from Provence with no residual sugar, which have a French elegance, and sparkling rosés, which are just as serious, but with a nice zing.

Iščete nekaj posebnega za vašo družbo? Priskbite si rose v večji steklenici: magnum (1.5 litra)  ali jeroboam (3 litre). Navdušenje je zagotovljeno.

Below is a selection of six rosés:

Rose Mediterranee 2021, Fiugiere: A light rose with a touch of Provençal elegance for relaxed summer gatherings and the perfect picnic companion. Beautiful aromas of white flowers, peach and citrus.

Rose Love by Leoube 2021, Chateau Leoube: A fuller bodied rosé with a wonderful berry aroma that also blends well with more delicate meat dishes.

Rose Premiere 2021, Figuiere: A very nice example of an elegant rosé wine from Provence. A light, sophisticated, smooth wine with aromas of citrus, strawberry, apricot and peach.

Prosecco Afra: Everything and more you could want from prosecco. A refreshing wine that's just crying out for another glass.

Rose brut, Domaine Slapšak: This excellent Dolenjska sparkling wine is a delight all over Slovenia. The French elegance of the slapšak rose bubbles is a good friend to almost any dish.

Champagne Rose de Saignee brut 2014: Even for the most special occasions. A resolute, dry champagne with full body and a juicy flavour, in which red cherries, blackberries and a hint of caramel, spicy wood and chalky minerality are easily recognisable.
